Jeans, a White Tee and a Puffer: The Met Gala Just Made Everyday Clothes the Main Event

The most exclusive night in fashion is about to celebrate the clothes you wore today.

On Thursday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue announced that the 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, and the Met Gala that opens it, will be called "extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday." The show will look at familiar, seemingly unremarkable pieces like T-shirts, jeans and puffer jackets, and at how designers take those everyday forms and materials and turn them into something surprising.

The gala itself lands on the first Monday in May, which in 2027 is May 3. Andrew Bolton, curator of The Costume Institute, is leading the exhibition, with Anna Wintour once again at the center of the night.

How we got here

This was not the original plan. Over the summer, the museum announced a show built around designer John Galliano. The backlash over his history of antisemitic remarks was immediate, and by August that exhibition was off. Two months later, the Met came back with a theme that could not be more different: no single star designer, just the clothes everyone already owns.

The Den's take: New York wrote this theme first

Anybody who grew up in the Bronx, Harlem, Washington Heights or Brooklyn already knows the poetry of the everyday. The crisp white tee you only wear once before it is not crisp anymore. The jeans with the perfect fade. The puffer that turns every New York winter into a uniform, and every block into a runway.

For decades, those looks were called streetwear, a word that kept them outside the museum. Now the museum is inviting them in.

That is exactly the kind of room the Den cares about. The Met Gala has always been fashion's hardest door to get through. A theme built on ordinary clothes asks a question the whole industry has to answer: when everyday style finally gets the spotlight, will the people and neighborhoods who invented that style get credit, and a seat?

What to watch for

  • The guest list. An everyday theme is an opening for designers and creatives who built their names in streetwear and independent fashion.
  • The red carpet. Expect celebrities to treat jeans and tees like couture, and expect the internet to debate who pulled it off.
  • The exhibition itself. The show opens to the public after the gala and is one of the most visited exhibitions in New York every year. Plan a trip.

Fashion spent years telling us what was extraordinary. Next spring, it is admitting what New York always knew: the everyday was the main event all along.
