Some wine events are about labels. RAW WINE is about the people who grow it.

This Sunday and Monday, November 8 and 9, RAW WINE New York takes over FIVE-TWO-A at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Hundreds of producers from around the world will pour wines made with organic or biodynamic farming and little to no intervention in the cellar, the category most people know as natural wine.

The Innovators Den will be on the floor Monday with press credentials, and we will be at the 10th anniversary celebration at Have & Meyer.

The details

  • Where: FIVE-TWO-A at Industry City, 33 35th Street, Brooklyn
  • Sunday, November 8: noon to 6 p.m.
  • Monday, November 9: noon to 5 p.m.
  • Who it is for: sommeliers, retailers, importers, chefs, writers and anyone who loves wine
  • Tickets: through rawwine.com

Natural wine, in plain English

Natural wine is less a strict rule than a philosophy. Growers farm without synthetic chemicals and let the grapes do most of the work: native yeasts, little or no added sulfur, minimal filtering. The result can be wild, cloudy, funky or incredibly pure, sometimes all in one glass. It is one of the most exciting corners of wine because so many of the producers are small families and independent growers, not big brands.

How to work a wine fair like a pro

1. Eat first and drink water often. Hundreds of tables is a marathon.

2. Spit. Every professional does it. You will taste more and remember more.

3. Go in with a plan. Pick three regions or styles you want to explore and start there.

4. Ask the grower one question. "What makes this vineyard different?" will get you a better story than any tasting note.

5. Take a photo of every label you love. You will not remember them tomorrow.

6. Try one thing you would never order. An orange wine. A pét-nat. A grape you cannot pronounce. That is the point.

The Den's take

Brindis covers every culture's table, and natural wine is where a lot of the most interesting new voices in wine are showing up: young growers, family farms, regions the big wine lists ignore. These are the people who will be pouring at the restaurants everyone is talking about next year.

We will bring back the producers, bottles and stories worth knowing. Follow along on our stories Monday, and if you are going, come say hello.

Please drink responsibly. 21+.
