Friday the 13th Ends the Double Retrograde. Here's the Sky Until Then

Some years the sky asks you to slow down. This fall it is not asking. It is holding the door shut.

For most of the past week, two of the planets astrologers tie most closely to daily life have been moving backward at the same time. Venus, the planet of love, money and taste, has been retrograde since Oct. 3. Mercury, the planet of texts, contracts, commutes and every "per my last email," joined it on Oct. 24. Both turn direct on the same day: Friday, Nov. 13. If you wanted a cosmic joke, you could not script a better one.

At the Den, we read the sky the way New Yorkers read the subway map. It is a tool for reflection, not a fortune teller. Nothing here is a prediction or a reason to quit your job. It is a calendar of moods, a reason to look up, and a decent excuse to finally reread that lease before you sign it.

First, the science part

Neither planet is actually reversing. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does, so when it passes us on the inside track, it appears to drift backward against the stars for about three weeks. The Farmers' Almanac puts it plainly: "Astronomers refer to this as apparent retrograde motion, because it is an optical illusion."

So the planets are fine. What astrology does with the illusion is the interesting part. Retrogrades are read as review periods: a season for the "re" words. Revisit, rethink, renegotiate, reconnect. Not the best window, traditionally, for brand new launches or big signatures.

The double retrograde, by the numbers

Here is how the timeline lines up across Cafe Astrology, AstroStyle and Synthesis Astrology:

  • Venus retrograde: stationed on Oct. 3 at about 8 degrees Scorpio, slipped back into Libra on Oct. 25, and turns direct on Nov. 13 at about 23 degrees Libra (7:27 p.m. ET, per Cafe Astrology).
  • Mercury retrograde: stationed on Oct. 24 at about 21 degrees Scorpio and turns direct on Nov. 13 at about 5 degrees Scorpio (10:53 a.m. ET, per Cafe Astrology).
  • The shadow: Synthesis Astrology notes the Venus cycle does not fully clear until mid December, when Venus moves past the degree where this all started.

AstroStyle, the AstroTwins' site, described having both planets retrograde at once as "akin to taking the medicine all in one gulp." That tracks. Love and money (Venus) are under review at the same moment that communication and logistics (Mercury) are. Translation for the city: double check the group chat before you send it, read the fine print on that holiday flight, and if an ex texts "you up," know that astrologers would call that the most retrograde thing possible.

Venus backing into Libra, the sign of partnership and balance, puts the spotlight on fairness. Who carries the weight in your relationships, your business deals, your friend group? Mercury in Scorpio, a sign associated with depth and secrets, is the investigator. It digs. Conversations you have been avoiding may surface on their own.

This weekend: Mars, Halloween and a clock change

The first stretch of our window gets busy fast.

Friday, Oct. 30: Mars squares retrograde Mercury, an aspect both Cafe Astrology and AstroStyle flag for that day. Squares are read as friction. Think short tempers, sharp words, a debate that should have been a DM. A good day to type your reply, wait an hour and then decide whether to send it.

Saturday, Oct. 31: For Halloween, the Moon sits in Cancer, the sign of home, family and comfort, before moving into Leo at 12:18 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. So the night starts cozy and ends dramatic. If you are out in costume Saturday night, from a Harlem house party to a Brooklyn warehouse, that is about as on theme as the sky gets. Cafe Astrology also notes Jupiter and Saturn form the first of three tense minor aspects that day, a pattern it says repeats into September 2027: a slow conversation between growth and structure that plays out over the year ahead.

Sunday, Nov. 1: The last quarter moon in Leo lands at 3:28 p.m. Eastern, and Cafe Astrology's listings switch to standard time that day as the clocks fall back. In astrology, the last quarter is a release point. Clear out what you finished with. That includes the closet, the inbox and the situationship.

The rewind: Hunter's Moon in Taurus

Quick look back, because it set the tone. The full moon peaked at 12:12 a.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 26, confirmed by both The Old Farmer's Almanac and Star Walk. It was the Hunter's Moon, the first full moon after the Harvest Moon. Astrologers placed it in Taurus, the sign of money, comfort and the body. Fun detail for the stargazers: Star Walk points out that astronomically, the Moon was actually sitting in the constellation Aries at the time. The zodiac signs astrologers use and the constellations astronomers map drifted apart centuries ago. Both can be true on their own terms.

Next week: the Scorpio new moon

The headline event of the coming week is the new moon in Scorpio, which Cafe Astrology times at 2:02 a.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 9 and Astrolis at 2:03 a.m., at about 17 degrees Scorpio. One minute apart, same message.

New moons are traditionally read as seeds. Scorpio new moons are deeper seeds: intentions about trust, intimacy, shared money, letting go and power. With Mercury and Venus still retrograde, astrologers would frame this one as a quiet intention rather than a loud launch. Write it down. Do not post it yet. Then watch what happens after Nov. 13, when both planets start moving forward again and Synthesis Astrology says decisions tend to feel better supported.

Scorpio season itself runs from Oct. 23 to Nov. 22, according to AstroStyle, with the Sun entering Sagittarius at 2:23 a.m. on Nov. 22 per Astrolis. So the whole double retrograde lives inside Scorpio season. Intense sign, intense window, intense city. New York has been training for this.

How the Den is playing it

From where we sit in Harlem, we build media, ads and businesses on deadlines. We are not pausing the work because of Mercury. But we do think the retrograde frame is useful as a habit, not a superstition. Back up your phone. Reread the contract. Return to the idea you shelved in the spring. Call the cousin you have been meaning to call. Fix the website before you pour money into ads.

And on Friday, Nov. 13, when both planets turn, maybe make that the day you hit "go" on whatever you spent the last three weeks refining. Retrograde is the rehearsal. Direct is opening night.
